Analysis of PITCHf/x Pitched Baseball Trajectories
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract An analysis is presented of 99 baseball trajectories measured by the PITCHf/x tracking system pitched by Boston Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester in the August 3, 2007, game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The analysis technique is described in detail. The drag and lift coefficients and the magnitude and direction of the spin vector are extracted and discussed. A pitch classification scheme is proposed based on the velocity and the magnitude and direction of the spin.

A Statistical Study of PITCHf/x Pitched Baseball Trajectories
A statistical study of PITCHf/x trajectories is presented with two goals: (1) to determine the accuracy of the constant-acceleration fit that is used to parametrize the actual trajectory and determine various quantities of interest, such as the release velocity and break; and (2) to estimate the size of the random deviations of the coordinate measurements from their true values and their effect...
متن کاملPerformance Metrics in Professional Baseball Pitchers before and after Surgical Treatment for Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
BACKGROUND High-performance throwing athletes may be susceptible to the development of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS). This condition can be career-threatening but the outcomes of treatment for NTOS in elite athletes have not been well characterized. The purpose of this study was to utilize objective performance metrics to evaluate the impact of surgical treatment for NTOS in Major ...
متن کاملWhat New Technologies Are Teaching Us About the Game of Baseball
The trajectory of a baseball moving through the air is very different from the one we teach in our introductory classes, in which the only force is that due to gravity. In reality, the aerodynamic drag force (which retards the motion) and the Magnus force on a spinning baseball (which causes the ball to curve) play very important roles that are crucial to many of the subtleties of the game. Des...

Major League Baseball (MLB) generated over $6 billion of revenue in 2007. Despite the sizable revenuegenerating capacity of this sport, the league’s 30 franchises (29 based in the US and 1 in Canada) have until recently relied primarily on the subjective wisdom of baseball insiders to guide personnel decisions and game strategy. Only in the last years has quantitative analysis played a substant...
متن کاملBaseball Scouting Reports via a Marked Point Process for Pitch Types
Statistics and baseball have always gone hand in hand. In baseball’s earliest days newspapers printed a summary of baseball games that showed the number of runs scored by each player and the number of runs each team scored in each inning (Schwarz, 2004). Over the years what we now know as a box score has evolved to include all of the various outcomes of every pitcher and batter that takes part ...
